There are thousands of ways to learn about world populations, discover cultures, traditions, and tongues, be enchanted by differences, and explore the unknown. As a place of encounter, trade, communication, work, and leisure, the street often acquires a particular meaning. It is a place to eat.drink..play...

Situated on one of Chennai's busiest streets - TTK Road, SPOONBILL is a casual all day dining experience paying tribute to the streets of the world. It is a mosaic of foods and habits, recipes and ingredients, traditions and places. Our bird's exploration starts with the Berliner's love for sausages and travelling through the French crepes, the Mexican Burritos, the Chinese Dim Sum and the Mediterranean, goes to the Indian Pav. All from an exciting live kitchen using state-of-the-art-equipment and advice from an international consultant chef.

Wurst

Wandering the streets eating a sausage? Who knows if the question was first raised in Charlottenburg? Berlin 1949: Reconstruction of the city was accompanied by hefty portions of the first currywurst, even now the real icon of German Street food. This was the year that Herta Heuwer began to see this food she had invented. It seems that it was created by accident, mixing various spices with Ketchup, curry powder and Worcestershire sauce, and then spreading this concoction on sliced grilled sausages.

At spoonbill, under the instructions of our consultant chef Jo, from Berlin, we serve Chennai's best Currywurst with 6 exotic curry flavours to choose from ; Madras curry, Thai, English, ginger mint, dry mango...and for daredevils, try the deadly spice... We also serve Bratwurst which is savoured best with our unique mustard sauce and a string of onions on a skewer.

Crêpes

This feathery egg pancake found throughout the streets of Paris and made with buckwheat in Brittany, accompanies strolls in many European cities. Filled with jam, chocolate or just a little powdered sugar, the crepe has become a must and a true street food classic. The savory version is also delicious, stuffed with delicacies like, ham and cheese or tuna or egg n mayonnaise - excellent for cravings.

Spoonbill is undoubtedly the best creperie in town. With sweet crêpes choices ranging from the simple choco banana crepe to nutella spreads and brownie with ice creme crêpes. There is nothing sweeter than a Spoonbill crepe. Savoury crêpes include the Chicken Ham cheese, Tuna and egg, sausage crêpes, paneer and the corn n spinach crêpes. All recipes mastered with a French eye for finesse and style.

Choose from the many crepe options. Coupled with a cappuccino or a fresh juice, the experience is heavenly. Try a French dessert...try a sweet crepe.

BURRITOS

A burrito is a type of Mexican street food consisting of a wheat flour tortilla wrapped or folded into a roughly cylindrical shape to completely enclose a filling. The flour tortilla is usually lightly grilled or steamed, to soften it and make it more pliable.

The word burrito means "little donkey" in Spanish. The name burrito as applied to the food item possibly derives from the appearance of a rolled up wheat tortilla, which vaguely resembles the ear of its namesake animal, or from bedrolls and packs that donkeys carried. In some areas, such as the Lower Rio Grande Valley, they are called patos, meaning "ducks", again presumably derived from their appearance.

At Spoonbill, just like in Mexico, refried beans make the base filling. Combined with fresh salad, salsa, cheese and sour cream and chicken for meat lovers, these make an ideal meal. Burritos are served with a side helping of tortilla chips topped with salsa - just spiced enough to suit all palates.

Momos and Noodles

Dim sum refers to a style of Chinese food prepared as small bite-sized or individual portions of food traditionally served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. Dim sum has its roots in travelers on the ancient Silk Road needing a place to rest. Thus teahouses were established along the roadside. Rural farmers, exhausted after working hard in the fields, would go to teahouses for a relaxing afternoon of tea and a bite of various snacks.

Certain kinds of instant dim sum have come onto the market in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore. Some stalls serve "street dim sum", also called Momos, which usually consist of dumplings or meatballs steamed in a large container and served as street food. At Spoonbill, we serve the Tibetan Momos in 2 variants - vegetarian and chicken. Served with a spicy chilli sauce, a standard Momo portion is enough for a full meal.

For noodle lovers, there is the hawker style crispy Hakka noodle dish served with vegetables, meat and exotic sauces.

Go by the ancient traditions. Experience Yum Cha! Have some green tea, momos and noodles.

Incredible India!

Spoonbill pays a glowing tribute to the streets of India's metros - Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata by serving delicious street foods from these cities.

Pav means a small loaf of bread in Marathi(Indian language). The word has been derived from Portuguese pão meaning "bread". It is generally served with a curried dish.

Pav Bhaji is an Indian street food that originated in Marathi cuisine. Bhaji in Marathi means vegetable dish. Pav bhaji consists of bhaji (a thick potato-based curry) garnished with coriander, chopped onion and a dash of lemon and baked pav. Keema Pav is a popular north Indian dish served in local Irani food stalls on the streets of Mumbai. Keema is a spicy curry made with minced meat and fresh peas, simmered in a pot with ginger, garlic, onions, tomatoes and a bunch of warm spices. The other two Mumbai icons are Ragada pattice and Vada pav.

From the streets of old Delhi, Spoonbill serves Tawa Kababs in both vegetarian and non vegetarian options. Served with Lachcha paratha and mint chutney, this dish is second to none.

From Kolkata, the Kathi rolls beckon. These are rolled parathas with delicious fillings and salad. At Spoonbill, there are many options to choose from.

Döner and Falafel

The Döner is the most popular street delicacy in Turkey. Seasoned meat is stacked on a vertical spit in the shape of an inverted cone. It is turned slowly, cooking against a vertical rotisserie. Tomato, onion or pineapple may be placed at the top of the stack for additional flavouring. The meat is cooked by charcoal, wood, electric, or gas burner.

The vegetarian Falafel is a deep-fried ball or patty made from ground chickpeas, fava beans, or both. Falafel is usually served in a pita, which acts as a pocket, or wrapped in a flatbread. The falafel balls are topped with salads and drizzled with yoghurt based sauces.

The Spoonbill Döner/Falafel is a meal by itself. Armed with Turkish warmth, served in the traditional flat bread with the best yoghurt sauce in town, this is a sure winner. Team it up with fries, juice, fruit yoghurt and coffee.

There's also the world favourite hummus dip served fresh at Spoonbill. Have along with Pita bread or fresh sesame topped Falafel balls.

Pub favourites

Dotted with pubs, the English landscape is incomplete without some great pub food. Cheese on toast is a local favourite. The Spoonbill offering is a lip smacking spread of cheddar cheese, corn kernels, secret sauces and chillies. Fish and chips is a special menu item and available on special days only.

Empanadas

Empanada is a stuffed pastry. The name comes from the Galician, Portuguese, and Spanish verb empanar, meaning to wrap or coat in bread. These are made by folding dough or bread around stuffing, which usually consists of a variety of meat, cheese, vegetables or fruits. Empanadas trace their origins to Galicia and Portugal. They first appeared in medieval Iberia during the time of the Moorish invasions. The dish was carried to Brazil and Indonesia by Portuguese colonizers, where they remain very popular, and to the Hispanic America and Philippines by Spanish colonizers.

At Spoonbill, the Empanadas come in 2 variants – Cheddar cheese & corn or Mozarella cheese & Jalapenos. Both vegetarian pastries are filled with cheese mixtures and served with a tangy ginger tamarind sauce. Ideal as starters or snacks, these are a world favourite.

Piadina

Piadina or Piada is a thin Italian flatbread, typically prepared in the Romagna region. It is usually made with white flour, lard or olive oil, salt and water. The dough was traditionally cooked on a terracotta dish, although nowadays flat pans or electric griddles are commonly used. Piadine are usually sold immediately after preparation in specialized kiosks (called piadinerie) filled with a variety of cheeses, cold cuts and vegetables, but also with sweet fillings such as jam.

At Spoonbill, the Piadina is filled with a vegetarian mixture of Onion, Tomato, Capsicum and Cheese cooked with Italian herbs. Along with the Spoonbill home made mustard sauce, the Piadina makes a great street style meal.

Tortilla Española & Patatas Bravas

The Tortilla Española, referred to, in the English language, as Tortilla, Spanish Omelette, is a typical Spanish dish consisting of a thick egg omelette made with potatoes and fried in olive oil. This is the most common gastronomic specialty found throughout Spain and is commonly served as a tapa or picnic dish. While there are numerous regional variations, the most common version is the one made with eggs, potatoes and onion.

Spoonbill serves the original Spanish Omelette fried in Olive Oil and filled with potatoes, caramelised onions and cheese. Along a baguette bread, the portion is big enough for a hearty meal.

Patatas bravas is a dish native to Spain, often served as a tapa in bars. Translated in English, Patatas Bravas literally means potatoes for the brave (spicy dish for the brave hearted!). It typically consists of white potatoes that have been cut into irregular shapes and then fried in oil and served warm with a sauce such as a spicy tomato sauce or a mayonnaise. This dish is commonly served in restaurants and bars throughout Spain, where it is traditionally accompanied by a shot of orujo or a glass of wine. It is one of the most spicy dishes served in Spain. Spoonbill serves the original Patatas Bravas made to perfection.
